Ladies, take control of your finances!

Ladies, take control of your finances!

We were 23. Priti used to work in a bank. Her dad complained how she never bothered about her finances and he had to take care of everything. All she did was sign in the box on the investment documents. Habituated to signing in the box, the height of negligence came when she put her signature in the box of amount on a cheque. Her excuse: But it’s a box. My reply, who gave you the job in a bank? I was appalled!

We were 25. We had gone shopping and I came to know Ritu was carrying thousands in cash. When enquired, I came to know she didn’t have a debit / credit card. She had dealt only with cash all her life! Her father wouldn’t let her and she never bothered about online banking or shopping.

I have known lots of women, young and old, shying away when it comes to finances. Be it about the banking transactions, paying the taxes, making the correct investments or saving for future, sadly, it doesn’t come under their purview. They’ve never felt the need to know about it even when it’s no rocket science. Pat comes their reply, what are dad, brothers and better halves for?

Well, ladies! When you’ve grown independent in other spheres of life, why leave finances behind? It’s time to get up and take charge. It’s your life. Take the reins in your hand.

START WITH BASICS

Get acquainted with your bank account. Make your dad / husband sit next to you and take you through the details of your account, how to transact, how to fill up bank slips / cheques. Next time, visit your bank branch and make the transaction yourself, talk to the manager, get an online account for yourself and learn to make payments from your mobile. You would realise it’s easier than you would have imagined.

UNDERSTAND YOUR PROFILE

The next step is to be aware of your earnings, how much you spend on pampering yourself or making those impulse purchases from your favourite shop. Keep a tab on your pattern of spending every month and you would realize how little you save. Note down if you have any goal of buying an asset or a piece of beautiful jewellery or accumulate savings for a holiday in Bali or for the extravagant spend on your birthday!

BE AWARE OF INVESTMENT AVENUES

Ask colleagues where they invest, how they save.  Pay regular visit to your tax consultant, understand your liability of taxes, share your financial goals with him and get advice on where to park your money for maximum benefits. Make sure you read up the basics on insurances, shares, mutual funds, fixed deposits etc. so that you can make a sound decision. Discuss with friends and relatives on latest trends. Follow news, be a part of those fb groups, or switch on to CNBC while you are sweating it out in the gym.

REVISIT GOALS

Make a plan for life with financial milestones. When you get that big promotion or a paycut at the time of downsizing, revisit your goals, evaluate and realign the investments.

The next time, someone gives you that duh look, share your wisdom and show them you know your Mr. Money, quite well!
